Jan de Beer was born around 1475, probably in or near Antwerp, and died in that city shortly before 10 November 1528. A member of a well‑established artistic family, he was the son of the painter Claes de Beer and later became the father of Aert de Beer. On 3 July 1508 he concluded a marriage contract with Katlijne Zeygers Jansdr. De Beer entered the Antwerp Guild of St Luke as an apprentice in 1490 and was admitted as a master in 1504.
