Biography

Albrecht Bouts (Leuven, 1451/1455 – Leuven, March 1549) belonged to the second generation of the artistic dynasty founded by his father, Dirk Bouts. As the youngest son of Dirk Bouts and brother of Dirk the Younger, he most likely received his initial training in the family workshop, where he acquired the technical and stylistic principles that would shape his career for years to come. His first appearance in historical records dates back to 1476, when he is mentioned as a ‘minor’ in connection with the division of an inheritance, which allows us to date his birth to no earlier than 1451.

On the death of Dirk Bouts in 1475, Albrecht appears to have left Leuven to continue his apprenticeship with another master, probably Hugo van der Goes, whose influence has been noted in some of his works. He is recorded again in Leuven in 1479, this time as a pictor ymaginum, confirming his professional independence. From that date onwards, he lived and worked continuously in the city, where he ran an active and long-established workshop.

The archives bear witness to his integration into Leuven society. Before 1481, he married for the first time to Marie Coocx, with whom he had several children, including two sons, Jean and Thierry. After becoming a widower, he married Élisabeth De Nausnydere, who died in 1520. Unlike his father, whose career was relatively short, Albrecht enjoyed exceptional longevity for his time and remained active until the mid-16th century.

His name appears regularly in municipal documents, attesting to local commissions, particularly for religious institutions. The chronicler Jan Molanus reports that he painted numerous works for the Augustinian convent and created an Assumption for the Chapel of Our Lady of the Little Choir in St Peter’s Collegiate Church. In 1518, he was commissioned to restore a Holy Cross intended for the town hall.

Albrecht Bouts died in Leuven in March 1549, at an exceptionally advanced age. His workshop, the direct successor to that of Dirk Bouts, played a decisive role in the dissemination of the family’s artistic style, particularly in the field of devotional panels.
