Biography

Dirk Bouts, also known as Dieric or Thierry Bouts, was probably born in Haarlem around 1415, although the sources remain incomplete and no documents clarify the circumstances of his artistic training. The earliest reliable references already describe him as an established master, leaving uncertain where he may have served his apprenticeship.

Bouts settled in Leuven during the 1450s, a period of significant economic and institutional development for the city. His integration into Leuven society is evidenced by his marriage to Katharina van der Brugghen, a member of the local bourgeoisie. The couple had four children, including two sons, Dirk the Younger and Albrecht, who would later continue their father’s workshop. Following the death of his first wife, Bouts married a second time in 1473, to Elisabeth Van Voshem, who also came from a prosperous family.

His career reached a decisive milestone in 1468, when he was appointed official painter to the city of Leuven. This position, which involved the execution of public and ceremonial commissions, attests to the institutional recognition he enjoyed at the time. Several municipal documents confirm his involvement in producing works for the city’s civic and religious authorities.

Bouts worked almost exclusively in Leuven, where he directed a workshop that remained active until his death in 1475 and was subsequently taken over by his sons—particularly Albrecht—who contributed to the dissemination of his father’s style and compositions throughout the Low Countries.
