Bruselas, Hanequin de
?, early XVth century - ?, ca 1475
Biography
Flemish architect who introduced the Flemish Gothic style to the Toledo area of Castile.
He was responsible for a family group of Flemish stonemasons and carvers, most of them with a refined technique learned in their places of origin. The group was made up of his two brothers Egas Cuman (sculptor) and Antón Martínez de Bruselas (builder), Pedro Guas and his son Juan.
In 1448 Hanequín de Bruselas is recorded as the senior master of Toledo Cathedral and head of the Flemish team.
In 1454 an agreement is recorded for the construction of the choir stalls in Cuenca Cathedral, which was executed by his brother Egas Cuman. This document is testimony to his role as head of the group of Flemish artists, heading the contracts and distributing the works among those he considered most suitable to carry them out.
