Founded in 1473 at the behest of the first Count of Tendilla, Don Iñigo López de Mendoza, and his wife Doña Elvira de Quiñones. In 1809 it was sacked, the monks were expelled although they returned repeatedly until 1835. The important altarpiece of Van Hemessen disappeared, several owners are registered until its present location in the museum of Cincinnati. The tombs of the founders were moved to San Ginés in Guadalajara.
