The portrait of Archduke Ernest of Austria, painted by Frans Pourbus the Younger around 1594, is a work that marks an important milestone in the artist’s career. It is undoubtedly one of the first major aristocratic portraits commissioned to Pourbus, who would later be renowned for his court portraits. This work was likely created at a pivotal moment, namely the appointment of Archduke Ernest as governor of the Spanish Netherlands, a role he assumed in 1594.
The portrait depicts Ernest in all his majesty, surrounded by a sumptuous setting. The composition, with its subtle use of high and low angles, creates an impression of grandeur, elevating the figure beyond ordinary humanity. Decorative elements such as the column, monumental drapery, and symbols of power—particularly the Order of the Golden Fleece and masculine jewelry—underscore the subject’s status and authority. The portrait highlights a sense of splendor through the meticulous details of the clothing, such as the heavy chain, the sword with ornate handles, and the precious clasps. The weakness in the rendering of the legs is certainly due to wear and tear, and possibly the consequences of an earlier presentation: the canvas, folded above the knees (see IPCE, Archivo Moreno 02039_B), suffered from rubbing on the lower part. It has since been unfolded during a restoration, returning to its original format.
This portrait was commissioned in the context of official recognition of Ernest as governor, a role he had only recently assumed prior to the creation of the painting. The work fits within the tradition of court portraits created for the Habsburgs. It is particularly interesting as part of a network of portraits created at the same time by other artists, such as Frans Francken the Elder, who also painted a portrait of the archduke for the Joyeuse Entrée in Antwerp. It is likely that Pourbus was introduced to Ernest’s court by Francken himself, which would explain his emergence within the princely elite. Thus, this portrait serves as an important testament to Archduke Ernest's role in the history of the Spanish Netherlands, while also showcasing the excellence of Frans Pourbus the Younger in the art of court portraiture.
It is currently held in the Kings' Room of the Monastery of las Descalzas Reales in Madrid (November 2024).
