The Virgin is depicted in bust format, her hands joined in prayer. This painting is likely a fragment of a Nativity scene, executed by a Bruges master closely associated with Adriaen Isenbrant. The format may have been altered in the 17th century, which is also the probable date of the current frame.
The provenance of the painting remains unknown, although it is possible that it entered the Museo de Valladolid as part of the collection transferred by the National Artistic Heritage Defense Service in 1941.
