An inscription situated at the bottom, on a stone parapet: IN HOC APPARVIT CHARITAS DEI IN NOBIS QVONIA FILIV(M) / SVVM VNNIGENITV(M) MISIT IN MVNDV VT VIVAMVS PER (IL)LVM. This inscription corresponds to a passage from the First Epistle of Saint John (1 John 4:9), with a few archaic spelling variations.

Observations

This painting is a reproduction of a composition attributed to Quentin Metsys (1466–1530), of which numerous versions are known, although the whereabouts of the original remain unknown to this day.
