Observations

The work, painted on both recto and verso, retains its original frame. The verso bears coats of arms that are no longer legible; only the motto, inscribed in Roman capitals, remains readable. It refers to the Gospel of Matthew 7:15–16. The sitter has often been identified as Christian II of Denmark, but no convincing evidence supports this attribution. He therefore remains anonymous.
