Biography

The style of the Epiphany Altarpiece of Covarrubias has an uncommon composition in comparison to other late Gothic art preserved in Spain, whether national or imported (Hernández Redondo 2001, p. 240). Despite numerous attributions to Flemish and Hispano-Flemish artists, Hernández Redondo theorizes that it may be the work of an anonymous artist whom he refers to as the "Master of Covarrubias." His attribution is based on a style marked by elongated proportions, solemnity, realism, and the prominent use of wrinkles, both on faces and necks (Hernández Redondo 2001, p. 248).

He attributes to this same artist works such as: The recumbent Christ of Medina del Campo (church of the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Medina del Campo), the recumbent Christ of San Lesmes (Monastery of San Juan), Saint Deacon (Indianapolis Museum), within others.

This artist shares a similar name to the "Master of the Virgin of Covarrubias", a 15th century painter that probably worked in the Van Eyck's workshop.
