In the absence of documentation, it has been attributed to Gil Siloe based on its style. Other authors suggest it could be the work of Diego de la Cruz, Diego Copín de Holanda (sculpture), Juan de Borgoña (painting), or an imported work (Hernández Redondo 2001, p. 243). Due to it's distinctive style, Hernández Redondo theorizes that it could be the work of an anonymous artist whom he refers to as: the Master of Covarrubias.
Of the four paintings on the altarpiece, three depict religious scenes and one is commemorative. This last one illustrates the painting's donor, Francisco García de Covarrubias, alongside Saints Cosmas and Damian (López de Guereño Sanz 2021, p. 106). The grisaille technique was used on the altarpiece doors.
