Polychromed by the Castilian painter Fernando del Rincón.
Its original shape was oval. Antonio Ponz described the piece when it was in the sacristy of the church of San Ildefonso in Alcalá de Henares. (A. Ponz, t. I, 3th. ed., 1787, p. 295)
After 1787, it was moved to the Antiques and Library Room of the Colegio Mayor in Alcalá de Henares.
It must have suffered damage, as it was restored and reduced to its current rectangular shape. It was also framed with an ornate molding topped with a episcopal miter.
Until its transfer to the Marqués de Valdecilla Historical Library, it presided over the rector's office at the Complutense University of Madrid.
