The work, lacking documentary proof of authorship, is attributed stylistically to Bigarny, who is known to have been in Granada in 1521 (del Río de la Hoz 2001, p. 163). It is recorded that Antón de Plasencia and Alonso Salamanca worked as polychromers, and Andrés Solórzano and Martín Bello as carvers. The praying sculptures of the Catholic Monarchs are later than the altarpiece, crafted by Diego de Siloé between 1528 and 1530 (González 2002, p. 137).
It has been regilded twice: in 1632 and between 1704 and 1705 (González 2002, p. 145).
